There are things I love about our house; kitchen, and things I don’t love about our house; family room, dining room, lack-of-a-drop-zone-room. The biggest issue is trying to make what I have work to achieve the look I want. I need serious ideas for getting our family room under some sort reasonable theme. It’s a bit chaotic.

This is from the summer because in its current state of holiday hysteria, I’m unwilling to even take a picture. Some items ie decor, have been rearranged.
We’ve also added a buttery yellow chair into the space on the left by the fireplace. It’s not my favorite chair and it’s not particularly pretty, but it needed a home and the family room is where it ended up. Not pictured are the curtains which are a light brownish color. The family room is open to the kitchen:
These two rooms have to coordinate somehow. It would be easy to just throw together some more coherent ‘earth tones’ and call it good. But I’m not really big on earth tones. I like color (as you can tell from the red couch that we bought a few years ago.)
The problem as it turns out, is that red couch. It doesn’t fit well in the room, only can be placed in the room one way, and it’s red. Its completely counter-intuitive to the beach color scheme I’d love for the room to have. Colors that would match this chair I bought at a thrift store:
I’d love for the house to be more like this outrageously beautiful home I recently discovered via Pinterest: iHeartOrganizing Very serious love of her home. The colors are so fresh and inviting, and calming, or something. It’s just…go look for yourself and see what I mean.
Fantastic right?
So, lend me some help with this family room. I love anything that has a good feeling, and is light or bright. Being in Seattle items that can help make a room feel brighter during the gloomy rainy season really help. IN particular I love things like this (if I had a million dollars):
I love all of these room designs (which can be found at Houzz.com) And there are many more in my Houzz Lookbook.
Help me out. How do I make the red couch work in a room that opens to black cabinets and ‘earth tones’ galore? What would you recommend?

I think that you can totally use the red couch and the teal chair and still have it a beachy theme! Use those as your accent colors and the rest more of the softer whites or beachy creams. Maybe a few splashes of teal and red in other objects.
