DIY: Yellow Ombre Painted Dresser

Posted on June 15, 2013

I’ve been looking at a lot of design blogs and I’ve been seeing some great trends, one of them is ombre. Have you seen ombre? It’s lovely. And better yet it’s very simple. Pick the main color you want to work with, in my case I chose yellow, and then lighten or darker the tone as many times as needed for your project. I planned to do this effect on my Birkeland 6 drawer dresser from Ikea. The first thing I needed to do was pick out exactly what shades of yellow I wanted. Because I had three rows of drawers, I wanted three different yellow tones. Originally I had planned to paint the dresser in grey tones using the paints I already had. But…

Welcome to the Island

Posted on June 11, 2013

It’s always fun to go exploring in someplace new, and doubly fun when it’s someplace new practically in your own backyard. There are a lot of places here in Seattle that we haven’t yet explored and Bainbridge Island is one of them. I took tons of pictures with my phone to capture those ‘in the moment’ moments and you can see those on my Instagram feed here BlogMamaAndrea. I’ve always wanted to go over to Bainbridge Island, which is about a 20-25 minute ferry ride from Seattle. In fact, we considered buying a house on the island when we first knew we were moving to Seattle. But since it is truly an island, and most accessible by ferry (unless you want to drive three…

They forced my hand…

Posted on June 8, 2013

It’s been a long time. A loooong time. I’ve sort of given up blogging. I still read many a blog, though most these days are design-diy related. It is in fact a combination of a diy blog I read that left me a comment on my last post, and my server that forced me to the blog today. I’m being dumped. My host has decided to no longer host. I’m a bit disgruntled by that. After all the headache it took to get the blog fixed after a hosting snafu, and the offer to move to my current host in December (who was helping me fix the previous problem), now they are doing away with hosting. So here I sit trying to decide what…

Tulip Rally and Tulip Town, a Weekend in the Pacific Northwest

Posted on April 24, 2013

Last weekend, we participated in the 32nd Annual Tulip Rally. I haven’t posted pictures till now because it’s sunny outside. As in SUNNY for the third day in row. Sunny trumps blogging. Period. The point of the Rally, which was hosted by the local MG Club and invited clubs from all around, like our club, PSMini.Org, is to answer the 12 pages of questions (that also contained turn by turn directions), and hopefully answer them right, and complete the course in less than 4 hours. I would show you more pictures of the actual course itself (which had gorgeous scenery) if I hadn’t been so busy being the navigator and looking for the answers to the questions. Items such as “Two racing horses (you need the house number)” (We got…

This week, by Instagram

Posted on April 5, 2013

I haven’t done ‘much’ this week; finished the nightstand project, went topless, took pictures of cherry blossoms, and recovered an ottoman. Not much in my world. Instead of any sort of lengthy explanation, I’ll let the magic of Instagram speak to what I got up to this week: I’m three video lectures behind on my Democratic Development class, not to mention I haven’t downloaded a single reading assignment. It’s going to be a busy Friday. What are your plans for the day?

#TheSeattleJob – We Mini Cooper’d it

Posted on March 25, 2013

Have you seen The Italian Job with Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron? No? Well, you should get up right now, in the middle of this post and go rent it, and then come back. Because this post will make a little more sense if you’ve seen the movie. This past Sunday, yesterday, the traditional day of rest, we did not rest. We did not sit. We didn’t even do laundry. We did this: Sounds fun doesn’t it? Well…It. Was. Here’s how it worked. Each car was grouped into teams of three cars. Everyone was given a list of Seattle landmarks to find and photograph. The twist is that each of the three cars had to be photographed with the landmark. For example here we are…

Snowpacalypse {Seattle style}

Posted on March 22, 2013

It’s a busy weekend around the BMA household. Vanilla has a doctors appointment after school, then an exam at the optometrist. I also need to find time to pick up his sister from the bus stop in between. Hopefully I make it or she’ll be out in this: Yes, it’s the Seattle version of a massive snow. And since we live on a mountain ridge and everything is hills (why do I keep moving to places where it’s all hills??), it can be lots of fun with drivers who are unfamiliar with driving in snow. There’s a strong possibility that instead of going to the grocery today and buying food for dinner, we will be having a fend for yourself, whatever you can find…

DIY Painted Drop Cloth Curtains

Posted on March 15, 2013

I’ve been wanting new curtains for the big window in the family room, and nothing quite seemed right. I tried blackout curtains during the heat wave of August, but since the window is so wide, I had a lot of trouble sliding the pocket curtains to the side when I wanted to have them open. I discovered after some trial and error that grommet style curtains work best because I can really slide them easily on the curtain rod.  It’s a tall window and the couch has only one way it can fit into the room, which means in front of the window. This system was working well until I happened to want to mix things up. I love the color teal; which would…

I loved you like crazy, until you went crazy

Posted on March 12, 2013

Instagram. Oh how I adore(d) you. When you first fell into my life, we were buddies, the best of busy bee’s taking all manner of pictures. I aimed, I clicked, you captured. It was heaven. But then something started happening. I’d get my picture, edit it to my hearts content with your little filters, I’d click next…and then…you’d leave me. Unexpectedly. I’d stare at you in shock, forlorn, confused at what would make you suddenly leave my life like an 80′s cover band. I am sad to say Instagram and I did part ways. It’s only in recent weeks, after a several months long hiatus, that you’ve come back into my life. And up until yesterday, I felt like I’d found my first love…

Maybe Martha

Posted on March 10, 2013

It’s been a whirlwind weekend. I’ve been DIY’ing my little wannabe Martha Stewart heart out. Here’s a sample of a few of the projects I’m working on this week. photo 1, shower curtains as curtains. Great idea but the window just need more…ohmph. So I’m going to oblige. photo 2, repurposing the shower curtain curtain in the master bathroom. I’m making the second shower curtain into a duvet by using the shower curtain and a white bed sheet. Coming soon… photo 3, DIY painted curtains. I used the curtains that previously hung in the family room and painted on stripes. It didn’t turn out exactly as I wanted so I’m going to go to plan B, DIY painting drop cloth curtains. Project coming soon.…
